One of the most common questions I hear is

“Why did my diet stop working?”

It is a fair question.


You may still be eating the same meals, following the same routine and putting in the same effort. Yet the scales have stopped moving. When that happens, many people assume they have done something wrong. They think they need to eat less, exercise more, or become stricter.


But sometimes, the explanation is not a lack of discipline.


Sometimes, your body has simply adapted.


YOUR BODY CHANGES AS YOU LOSE WEIGHT

A weight-loss plan does not act on a body that stays exactly the same.


As you lose weight, your body becomes smaller. A smaller body naturally needs less energy to function and move than it did before. This means the calorie intake that created a deficit at the beginning may gradually become closer to your new maintenance needs.


But body size is only part of the explanation.


Your body can also become more efficient with the energy available to it.


This is where adaptive thermogenesis comes in.

WHAT IS ADAPTIVE THERMOGENISIS?

Adaptive thermogenesis is the term used to describe a reduction in energy expenditure that can happen during weight loss. In simple terms, your body may begin to use less energy than expected.


This does not mean your metabolism is broken. It is a normal biological response.


For most of human history, food was not always reliably available. The ability to conserve energy during periods of reduced food intake helped us survive. Today, that same protective response can make continued weight loss more difficult.


Your body is not deliberately working against you.


It is responding to what it interprets as reduced energy availability.


THE CHANGES YOU MAY NOT NOTICE


Some of the most important adaptations are easy to miss.


You may begin moving less without realising it. You might sit for longer, fidget less, take fewer steps or feel less inclined to stay active throughout the day.

This everyday movement is known as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT.

It includes all the movement that happens outside planned exercise, such as walking around the house, standing, cleaning, carrying shopping or taking the stairs. Individually, these actions may seem small, but together they can make a meaningful difference to daily energy expenditure.

Your workouts may also become more efficient. The same walk, run or class may require less energy than it did before because your body has become fitter and lighter. Muscle mass matters too.

During weight loss, preserving muscle helps support strength, physical function and energy expenditure.


This is one reason adequate protein and resistance training can be important during a weight-loss programme.


So even when the plan looks the same on paper, the body following it may be very different from the one that started.


A PLATEAU IS NOT ALWAYS FAILURE

A plateau can feel personal, making you question your effort, consistency and even your ability to succeed. But it is not always evidence that you have failed. Sometimes, it is simply a sign that your energy needs have changed, your everyday movement has decreased, your body composition has shifted or the original plan is no longer creating the same response.


That is why the most useful question is not always, “How can I eat less?” but rather, “What has changed, and what does my body need now?”

The answer may involve reviewing protein intake, strength training, sleep, stress, daily movement, or whether a period of maintenance would be more appropriate. The right adjustment will vary from person to person, and a plateau does not automatically mean that further restriction is needed.

The same diet can stop producing the same results because your body does not remain unchanged while you follow it.

It becomes lighter. It becomes more efficient. It adapts.

Understanding this can make a plateau feel less like failure and more like a point of reassessment.

The plan may not need to become harsher.

It may simply need to evolve.
